Classic Car Rally27th May 2017
First and foremost, we’d like to thank John Savage and the Border Motor Club for putting on such a great classic car rally.
You usually find us at the track with Geoff Steel Racing, so to enter into this type of rally was a new experience for us, and we loved it!
We (that is Andy and Simon) were blown away by how friendly everyone was, and really enjoyed seeing all the different makes and models of car all together. We had a good chat with a few regulars and even had time for the obligatory bacon butty before we hit the road!
For those unfamiliar with classic car rallies, you’re given a starting point, there after nothing is revealed until that day. The route, the map, it’s all issued at the event so nobody has an advantage. Thankfully we cleared scrutineering, though it’s a shame they only tested the cars and not our ability to read maps…. we only missed a couple of turnings, not bad for the new kids on the block!
We took to the road in our 1967 MGB GT and 1988 Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth. After meeting in Brigg the route wound through the stunning Lincolnshire Wolds, covered many country lanes and passed several pretty villages.
That said some of the more remote roads did give us some challenges. Despite having probably one of the more modern suspension set ups, the Cosworth lost the mud flaps out on the fens, was it bumpy? Yes just a little bit, but we shouldn’t complain, some of the old timers must have really felt it with stiff suspension.
On a “we really shouldn’t laugh at this” note, a good friend who entered with his modified Nova, found one of the roads so bumpy he actually got beached. As I said, really not funny and thankfully he was able to un-beach himself by giving it rock all, not a manoeuvre we would fancy trying in the MG, but it did entertain us!
The day finished off at The Red Lion in Redbourne for a drink and another chance to marvel at some of the other entries, got to say, loved the Mk1 Ford Escort.
We’re at Caister next and can’t wait, we’ll keep you posted with the events we’re entering over the summer, come and see us if you can. All our cars are for sale, including the ones we’re driving, so it’s a great opportunity to see them in action.
