Classic Car Artist15th February 2017
We want to tell you about James Yates, the South African artist, as we think we’ve stumbled upon something quite special. He was born in Johannesburg in 1944 and although James has celebrated decades of success as a landscape artist, with clients such as Readers Digest and BP, he has now expanded his subjects to include classic cars.
Not surprisingly James is a car fanatic himself. He completely renovated his own Porsche 356 Speedster, has run an Alfa Romeo Junior and a 1958 Alfa Romeo Spider, plus a Lancia Flavia Coupe to name but a few. His absolute commitment to detail is evident not just in his own collection but also his paintings.
James now offers a service where you either email or post him a photograph of your treasured classic car and he turns it into a one-off, unique, oil on canvas piece of art work.
Although James is based in South Africa, he has a cracking package and delivery service. We’ve been through the process (with a landscape) so have seen how well the paintings arrive. It’s a really robust container, the canvas is rolled and the frame collapsed, so it fits together really well in transit and is very easy to reassemble at this end (being the UK).
James has some of his painted classic car collection on display at the moment in the Franschhook Motor Museum. You can also see some of his work online at http://www.jamesyatesgallery.co.uk/classic-car-gallery/ to get a feel for the level of quality. Although by definition not a classic car yet, his Porsche 917 and the absolute classic, the Mercedes 300SL, are very impressive but you look and chose your favourite.
The paintings themselves are imposing. They start at around 30 x 50 inches, so really do capture detail. The ultimate tribute to your classic car. We’ll keep you posted when we decide which one we’re going to have done and publish the results – we’ve just the spot in our showroom.
