Ypres Historics Rally, Belgium11th July 2017
The Classic Classics guys have enjoyed lots of local events so far this year. But when Simon realised it was the 25th birthday of the Belgium Historic Ypres Rally, it didn’t much convincing before he was making a plan to go. He soon re-jigged his annual trip to France to incorporate a hop over the border into Belgium to take in some of Europe’s finest historic rally cars. It’s so close by, it would be rude not too.
It wasn’t long before Simon was heading south, Dover bound, ready for the ferry to Calais. After the quick hop over the channel, it was only an hour and a half to Ypres which is easily reached. The perfect introduction to following your favourite old timers over the pond.
Although there were plenty of modern rally spec cars, there was also an impressive 100 classic sports cars entered in the event. Over the 5 days there was a lot of scrutineering, qualifying, rallying and presentations on 13 stages and 269 kilometres of routes. There was just so much going on, it’s no exaggeration to say there was something for everyone.
One of Simon’s favourite aspects of the Ypres Rally was that all stages for all the cars started and finished in the main square in Ypres itself. Although it was great to head out into the country to take in some of the grittier sections of the rally, like Mesen for example, it did create a fantastic atmosphere and a great hub of activity in the town. Great traditional food and beer was served in abundance and the locals were very friendly, Simon was impressed!
The Lancia was a real stand out, driven by a British team coincidentally, Paul Spooner and Steve Perez did a great job and held their own with several top 3 in class results over the stages, congrats guys! The old Riley, Ford Anglia and of course the BMW’s were all great to see out in the field too.
It’s safe to say we would highly recommend a trip out to the Historic Ypres Rally, in fact it’s so highly recommended Simon’s hotel is already booked for next year! In the meantime, we’re back in Lincolnshire and heading to Pistons in the Park next month at the Lincolnshire Showground, August 12th, see you there – get in touch for more details.
